Batwing chaps are usually work chaps that are worn on ranches throughout the west to protect cowboys from the elements. We recommend Moccasin Cowhide or Oil Tan Leather.
We make our Batwings from a pattern taken from a pair of chaps made in the early 1930's that have seen plenty of use on the ranch. They can be made with 3 or 4 snaps on each leg. We use heavy smooth stainless steel conchos on the outside of the leg. These conchos will not bend and look really sharp.
Options are hand carved or basket-stamped yokes on top and silver conchos, your brand or initials.
Shotgun Chaps are the most common type of chaps used by working cowboys in our area of Colorado. They are usually fastened on the leg with heavy brass zippers. Although we have made some with snaps and conchos fastened on the upper leg like chinks.

Chinks have become popular in recent years. I have been told that historians say the earliest chinks were seen on a cowboy was in the early 1960's. Chinks seem to have come to our area by way of the buckaroos of the northwestern United States. They give the upper leg protection from a rope when working cattle, yet allows more freedom of movement when on the ground. ( GROUND= a place where most cowboys prefer not to be but where they occasionally end up! )
Chinks are secured to the legs much like the Batwings, with 3 snaps on each leg.
